In the lead-up to Recruitment Entrepreneur’s 5th birthday, we sat down with CEO Abid Hamid and asked him to share a few of his pearls of wisdom that have been most applicable in the last five years. These are his top five tips for leaders in business:
Avoid procrastination.
I don’t do ‘maybes’. Answer everything with either a yes or a no. Don’t fear making a mistake by committing to a decision; making mistakes is inevitable, but they can be valuable lessons to learn from.
Plan and budget carefully.
If you don’t know where you’re going, any road can take you there – and, more importantly, how will you know when you arrive? When running a business, a clear budget is like true North on a compass – it keeps you from straying too far and getting lost.
Know what you can do. And especially what you can’t.
Everybody has strengths and weaknesses. There are things that will be core to you, and things that are chores. Decide which are which and delegate accordingly.
Manage your ego.
Of course, it’s important to be confident. If you don’t believe in yourself, nobody else will. However, it can be hard to let go of your ego and view yourself critically, both of which are vital if you are
to be a good leader.
Trust your staff.
When you hire someone, trust them to do their job. You should be there to guide and counsel them where necessary, but it is equally important to give them the space they need to perform well.
